How to Install Mods for Mount and Blade Warband

Mount & Blade fans will know how common (and awesome) modding is for the franchise. While Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is still in beta, there are hundreds if not thousands of mods available already. In this guide we'll explain two simple ways of installing mods for M&B II: Bannerlord.

Quick disclaimer before we start: Bannerlord is still in beta. Modders generally update their mods regularly, but they may break your game regardless. Always check if the mods you're installing are compatible with the current version of the game. Use them at your own discretion. Additionally, you need an account on the website that provides the mods.

Finding mods

Because developer TaleWorlds Interactive knows exactly how dedicated and excited their modding community is, mods are fairly easy to install. Any mod available for Bannerlord can be found on the NexusMods website. You can filter to what you want, or specifically search for something you want fixed, tweaked, or overhauled.

When you've found a mod you like, you obviously click it to get redirected to it's specific Nexus page. Here, there's a couple of tabs to go through. First, the Description is important. It tells you what the mod does to your game and lists any requirements (if any). Some mods need other mods to run. Then it's time to go to the Files tab.

How to install mods manually

In the Files tab, there's two orange buttons. To manually download and install mods, follow the instructions below.

  • In the Files tab, click on Manual Download. Alternatively, you can click on Manual at the top right, regardless of which tab you're in
  • Select Slow Download
  • Copy the .ZIP file to your Modules folder for Bannerlord. For Steam users, that is: D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules
  • Extract the file in the Modules folder using a program like 7-zip or WinRAR. Make sure you extract it to a separate folder, one for every new mod you're installing
  • You're now clear to play the game as usual. No further installation is required (unless the mod pages states so specifically). When in the launcher screen, select Mods (next to News) under Singleplayer
  • Enable (check the box) of the mod you just 'installed'

Using Vortex mod manager

Alternatively, there's a tool called Vortex you can use. You can download it through the Nexus website and it basically helps you to automatically install mods from NexusMods.

  • First, install Vortex
  • In the Games tab, find Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and click on the white check mark to start managing mods for Bannerlord
  • Now, on the preferred mod page on NexusMods, click Vortex, select Slow Download and accept that it opens in Vortex
  • In Vortex, under Downloads click on the button Install to install the mod, click enable in the top right pop-up
  • You can now launch the game as usual. Check if the mods are installed in the Singleplayer Mod tab

Be advised that I personally have some trouble getting Vortex to work. So if mods are not showing up in the Mod tab after booting the game, you might want to do it manually.

And that's that. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord has amazing mod support that is essentially drag and drop. Again, with it being a beta, compatibility issues may arise. Also note that some mods interfere with other ones. That information is usually disclosed on the mods page. If you keep running in to trouble, you can always ask in the comments below! Besides, the game is a huge amount of fun without mods too.
