Introduction

Instructor Photo

After first getting involved in welding 20 years ago, I am now going on my 7th year as a welding instructor.  Hopefully, you are excited to learn from much of my experience with a guided instructional 17 chapters of various topics of printreading.  Several industries will be represented all of which are related to metal and welding. Upon completion of the course, you will have acquired the ability to communicate information seen on a print and visually break down and understand various components within a drawing.

Course Description

The course builds on itself starting with basic terms and pictorials before quickly moving to more complex terms, drawings, concepts, and metal items with an emphasis on welding.

What to Expect in this Course

You will need the textbook first and foremost, a computer with access to the internet (preferable with a c/d drive, camera, microphone, and audio), and a calculator. Outside of lectures, you should plan on around 5 hours a week average of dedicated homework/study time.  Some weeks may demand more time while others may be less.  Your relevant experience and completion of other courses will certainly help and allow for shorter time spent weekly on course work where those very new to this topic may need to spend a little more. Canvas will be heavily utilized in conjunction with the textbook and a supportive weekly lecture.

Other Relevant Course Information

Your success in this course will revolve around your dedication to the course as a whole. Reading the assigned chapters slowly, highlighting key concepts, and spending time on absorbing information displayed in the "Figures" are crucial.  Going through the Review Questions methodically (not hunt and peck technique) and ensuring the chosen answer is understood will minimize the time spent later for studying for cumulative testing. Breaking down prints in the Trade Competency Tests is the only way to really learn how to understanding the information displayed in a drawing.  It is acquired and therefore must have dedicated time put into extrapolating the various items included in a drawing.
